OneTapWitness

Privacy Policy

Effective date: 2026-07-19  ·  Applies to the OneTapWitness web application at onetapwitness.com

OneTapWitness (“OneTapWitness,” “the app,” “we,” “us”) is a civic-witness recording tool. This policy explains what information the app handles, where that information goes, and the choices you have. Plain-language summary first, details below.

The short version.

1. Who we are

OneTapWitness is operated by Powered By Civics (“the operator”). For any privacy question or request, contact us at privacy@onetapwitness.com.

2. Information the app handles

Recordings you create

When you record, audio/video is captured on your device. To keep a recording safe if the app is interrupted, it is stored on your device using your browser’s local storage (IndexedDB). If you have connected a cloud account, the recording is uploaded to that account. We do not receive a copy on any server we control.

Location (GPS)

If you allow location access, the app reads your device’s GPS position while recording and can include it in the alert messages you send to your chosen contacts. Location is not collected in the background and is not sent to us.

Trusted-contact alerts

You may designate contacts and trigger alert emails (for example, a “recording has started” notice with your location). These messages are delivered through a third-party email service (EmailJS) to the addresses you enter. We do not use your contacts for any other purpose.

Cloud-storage connection

If you connect Google Drive or Dropbox, the app receives an access credential from that provider so it can upload your recordings to your account. For Google Drive the app uses the restricted drive.file scope, which means the app can only see and manage the files it creates in your Drive — it cannot see your other Drive files. These credentials are stored on your device and are used only to upload your recordings at your request.

Settings and preferences

The app saves your preferences (such as PIN/vault settings, disguise options, and feature toggles) in your browser’s local storage on your device. These stay on your device.

Payment

Paid features are processed by Stripe. You enter payment details directly with Stripe; OneTapWitness does not receive, see, or store your full card number.

What we do not collect. No advertising identifiers, no analytics or usage tracking, no location history, and no server-side copy of your recordings, contacts, or account.

3. Where your information goes (third-party services)

The app connects to the following services only to perform the functions you request. Each has its own privacy policy governing the data it receives:

Google Drive
Optional cloud storage of your recordings to your Google account (drive.file scope). See the Google Privacy Policy.
Dropbox
Optional cloud storage of your recordings to your Dropbox account. See the Dropbox Privacy Policy.
EmailJS
Delivers the alert/location emails you send to contacts you choose. See the EmailJS Privacy Policy.
Stripe
Processes payments for paid features. See the Stripe Privacy Policy.

4. Google API Services — Limited Use

OneTapWitness’s use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data obtained through Google Drive is used solely to provide and improve the cloud-storage feature you enabled, is not transferred to others except as necessary to provide that feature or as required by law, is not used for advertising, and is not read by humans except with your consent, for security, or as required by law.

5. How long information is kept

6. Your choices and rights

7. Children

OneTapWitness is not directed to children and is intended for users aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children below that age.

8. Security

Because your recordings and credentials are held on your device or in your own cloud account rather than on our servers, you are in control of them. Use your device’s lock, keep your browser updated, and protect any PIN you set in the app. No method of electronic storage is perfectly secure.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page and, for material changes, provide notice within the app.

10. Governing law & contact

This policy is governed by the laws of the State of Florida, USA, consistent with the OneTapWitness Terms of Service. Questions or requests: privacy@onetapwitness.com.
